History

The beginnings of Denton the city are closely tied with the beginning of Denton County. Unlike most of its neighbors in North Texas, there are no records of a large Native American population in the area before 1800. William S. Peters of Kentucky first obtained a land grant from the Texas Congress in the mid-18000’s, naming his town Peters Colony and in 1846, the Texas legislature formed Denton County.

Settlers went through two different county seats before finally settling on Denton in 1857, naming both the county and the town in honor of John B. Denton, a lawyer and minister who was killed in an 1841 Indian fight led by General Edward Tarrant against the Keechi Indians. Incorporated in 1866, Denton’s first mayor was J.B. Sawyer and its growth began.

Denton became a strong center for agricultural and manufacturing trade, with the Texas and Pacific Railroad giving the town its first rail connection. That railroad brought in new people to the area, although in spite of this, Denton didn’t really develop into a strong manufacturing area, but remained more of an agricultural workforce.

Denton’s reputation as a college town began when North Texas Normal College was founded in 1890 (now known as the University of North Texas) and the Girls’ Industrial College (now Texas Woman’s University) in 1903. Growing steadily, their impact on Denton and its economy and culture grew.

Denton’s population grew quickly from 26,844 in 1960 to almost double that in the 1980’s, the growth tied into being so close to the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Today, Denton is a thriving area, its downtown area a historic place where development of the famous Fry Street area is an ongoing concern and citizens work towards the preservation of Denton’s history.
